Coupons aren’t a Craze!

Tips from a local expert…..

Saving money is a good Financial Strategy for Life!  Recently Janice Weiss, marketing and sales coordinator for WSIC radio, sat in for my radio show as a guest. We discussed various ways to save money. I didn’t know she was a coupon queen and learned a lot just listening to her. So I asked her for some tips for our blog readers.  Enjoy and save!

Janice says most articles focused on couponing start with “When I lost my job”, or with some reference to a loss in income as a catalyst to this very time-consuming money saving tool. That was not her case. She started couponing in the spring of 2010. Her family income afforded her the luxury of yearly vacations, weekend car trips, and spur of the moment purchases at the time. Couponing created a fun challenge for her. Cutting and filing the coupons, as well as finding the best deal of the week became a Sunday morning family ritual. It was a fulfilling task that benefited her family and allowed them to make more charitable donations due to the savings.

During 2012, however, her family’s income was substantially cut like millions of other Americans. The stock pile of food, health and beauty, paper products, etc. that she accumulated over the years kept her family clean and fed! Couponing continues to help her family eat well and donate to charity.2

2Additional Tips1

Coupon stacking is another way to cash in on savings! When you stack coupons, you use one store coupon and one matching manufacturer coupon following the specific terms of each coupon. Some stores also take competitor store coupons and will let you stack these as well. As always, check your local store coupon policies.

New Technology

Technology has definitely impacted couponing. The days of only matching coupons to the Sunday paper ads and weekly supermarket inserts are over! Be savvy! Websites can help you save more!

Some websites that Janice uses weekly are www.southernsavers.com and www.thekrazycouponlady.com. These websites do the matching for you, as well as alert you to unadvertised deals! She uses the www.thekrazycouponlady.com process personalized for her family. In addition, there are hundreds of coupon “apps” out there for smart phone users. Some sites and apps include Smart Source Xpress, Coupons.com, and Target Cartwheel. One additional App that is new to the market, but causing a stir is Ibotta. With this App; you actually earn money each time you shop.

Whether to financially improve your current situation or save money for vacations, couponing is a money saving tool worth investigating!

Let us know how much you save using these tips!
