Women: The New Breadwinner!

I recently read this article on bbc.com about U.S. Mothers being the new breadwinners. The article made me think about the past in terms of women and what we have achieved.

Do you remember sitting in history class learning about World War Two and the contributions women made during this time?

Rosey the RiveterI know I do. I was fortunate enough to be able to ask my mother about this time in history. She was born and 1915. She went through the great depression and met my father before he deployed  during World War Two. She always told me about Rosie the Riveter. She would say Rosie was the symbol for women like me. She was a working woman. I always remembered that being a defining moment for my Mother; to share her story and encourage me.

I’m going to age my self here, but oh well. I lost my Father at age 7 and my mother took the role as the breadwinner in the family. She never remarried and during the 60’s that’s what a women was supposed to do. She became my very own Rosie the Riveter. She took care of me and put me through college as a single mother and and the sole earner of income for my family. She taught me the value of a dollar and the importance of management by her actions.

As I grew up, the fight for women’s rights grew  heated and women succeeded. My life experience made me more determined to make a life for myself and for my future family. Eventually my work payed off because I became the sole bread winner for me and my two kids. I was their Rosie the Riveter, like my mom was for me. I still am the sole source of income for me and my daughter.

Ha, it’s funny how that came full circle! The article covers the present day woman as a sole source of income for her family. The article puts much into perspective and makes you think. I encourage all of you to read it and see what it draws up from your or your parents history.
