Why I walk… I walk for those who can’t. For those who can’t remember yesterday. For those who can’t remember what they had for lunch or why lunch is important. I walk because I can. I CAN remember yesterday and I remember all that she has done for me and all she has contributed to my yesterdays. I walk for my mother. I walk in support of the millions of paid and unpaid caregivers caring for and supporting someone with Alzheimer’s.
My mother has Dementia, Alzheimer’s type. Alzheimer’s is a disease of the brain. It is a type of dementia that causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior. Symptoms usually develop slowly and get worse over time. It’s a dreadful disease. It robs you of one of the most precious of treasures, your memories. In my journey to understand and find the right care solution for my mother I have encountered many families who are impacted by Alzheimer’s. If you don’t know someone who has been impacted you soon will. It’s estimated that there will be a new case of Alzheimer’s disease diagnosed in the United States every 69 seconds.
The Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s™ is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. Held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide, this inspiring event calls on participants of all ages and abilities to reclaim the future for millions. Together, we can end Alzheimer’s disease, the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death.
